Bienvenue au 5e année

bienvenue

Welcome to my first post for the 2020-2021 school year!  I am excited to get my blog up and running again. Please visit regularly for updates on what our class is doing this year.  My blog is a great way to keep up to date on what we are doing from day to day as well as homework and messages that I need to send your way.

I hope you find this blog helpful as we navigate grade 5 together with your wonderful children that I have the privilege of teaching this year!

Today in math we started our first lesson in chapter 6 on multiplication.  Today’s lesson was a review of a few of the strategies that the students learned in previous years: doubling, multiplying by 5 than subtracting or adding, and repeated addition from a known product.  After doing some examples together, the students were assigned exercises 3, 4, 8, 5, 11 and 12 on page 178-179.

We also finished our graphic organizer and began the introductory paragraph of our essay.  Students need to do some research for their essay topics.  Please have your child research their topic and to write some jot notes.  They will need this for their essay next week.  Students must also site where the information came from.

In Google classroom the students listened to a read aloud and answered some questions about the persuasive tactics used by the boy in the story. We will be focusing on our persuasive essays in the upcoming couple of weeks in preparation for the oratorical.

They students had music and gym this afternoon.

Please note that I have extended the order date for Scholastic as there were a number of students who wanted to place an order. Please do so by Friday, March 20th.

Please note that there is no school Monday, March 16th.

The class started their morning with music.

In sciences we have started a new unit on matter.  Today we learned some basic vocabulary related to this topic: substance, properties, and matter.  We also read and discussed the three states of matter: solid, liquid and gas.

In math today, we completed our final evaluation on chapter 1 – Patterns.  We will be starting chapter 6 next on multiplication. Your child should practice his/her math facts each evening. This will help them tremendously in this unit.

In our class we will be celebrating Career Day. The students are permitted to dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up. I have informed the students that we will use this activity as a speaking opportunity and I would like for them to talk about their Career Day choice. They will be given time in class to prepare for this. I advised the students that a costume is not a requirement but they must all do the presentation.

At the end of the day the students continued to work on their graphic organizer for the different First Nations societies that we have already learned.

Please note that I have extended the order date for Scholastic as there were a number of students who wanted to place an order. Please do so by Friday, March 20th.

Today in math we concluded our unit on patterns.  We reviewed our lesson from yesterday on writing equations using numerical expressions: for example, t – 7 = 18.   We corrected the assigned exercises 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 9 on page 28 for individual practice. The students completed the end of chapter review in preparation for their evaluation tomorrow.  Students are responsible for material covered in chapter 1 including lessons 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7.

In French I read chapter four in our short novel Le secret de l’île to the class.  As we read each chapter the students will complete 3-4 short comprehension exercises as well as write various journal entries.

In social studies we read and discussed how the Wolastoqiyik lived.  We talked about their dwellings, transportation, food, clothing, tools and remedies.  The students are noticing many similarities among the different societies we are studying.

In French the students completed a reading comprehension exercise. They were given a short text and had to complete some vocabulary work and short answer questions based on the text.

What a wonderful way to start our day by snowshoeing through the trails at Manuel’s River!  The weather was great and we had a awesome time learning about how the early settlers used the resources that surround us everyday!  Our inside activity with the large floor map was equally as entertaining.  Thank-you to our parent volunteer that came out to help our class today.  We appreciate you!

After lunch the students completed a exit card about what they learned during our outing to Manual’s River.

We worked with our buddy readers today on completing a simple book review. They also had some St. Paddy’s Day inspired activities that focused on French sounds.

Please note that there is not school on Friday, March 6th. It is a PD day for teachers.

With the delay start today we only had time to correct our mid-chapter review exercises from yesterday in math. The students seem to be very comfortable with our chapter on patterns up to this point. There is just one concept left to teach; hence, our final assessment will be on Tuesday March 10th.

In language arts, we read another sample of a persuasive piece of writing and reviewed it to identify the purpose, opinion, tone, and supporting reasons.

In science the students finished presenting their Ruth Goldberg inspired machines.

The students went to the library this afternoon to complete the students surveys required by the district.

The grade five classes will be going on a field trip to the Manuel’s River Interpretation Centre next week.  A permission form for this field trip went home with your child on Wednesday.  The cost of the outing is $11.  Please return the permission form and fees with your child by Tuesday, March 3rd.

Scholastic order forms went home with your child yesterday. Orders are due back by March 10th.

My students enjoyed creating their Ruth Goldberg inspired machines yesterday. They spent the afternoon creating and problem solving to get their machines to work. You can see their creations in the pictures above. Bravo mes amis!

In math today we reviewed what we have learned concerning patterns so far in this unit. The students completed the mid-chapter review on page 20-21 to reinforce these concepts. There were five questions in total. Those who did not finish will need to do so for homework. We will correct the exercises together in class tomorrow.

In sciences the students completed a reflection exercise about the Ruth Goldberg inspired simple machines that they created yesterday. Students were asked what worked, what didn’t work, what changes they made to their original design and why. The students also presented their creations to the class with the help of pictures that I took yesterday.

In language arts we continued to talk about the power of persuasion.  The students completed a simple but effective exercise.  They each had to find an advertisement from a magazine.  Using the ad that they chose, the students had to identify the purpose, opinion, audience, support and persuasiveness of the ad.

The students had gym today.

I placed the heart back on my board today and each student signed his/her name on the heart once he/she had completed an act of kindness again today. At the end of the day everyone had completed an act of kindness!

The grade five classes will be going on a field trip to the Manuel’s River Interpretation Centre next week.  A permission form for this field trip went home with your child yesterday.  The cost of the outing is $11.  Please return the permission form and fees with your child by Tuesday, March 3rd.

Scholastic order forms went home with your child yesterday. Orders are due back by March 10th.
